“Only the rich and famous need apply” – well, not necessarily, but to gain access to the world’s top resorts will cost plenty. The short story is that if you have to know how much it is going to set you back, you probably cannot afford it. If you are lucky like me, visiting these grand places is all part of the job and somebody else pays the bills – life can be very cruel!
Sit back and relax as we whisk you away on a virtual tour of five amazing resorts that only the tiniest percentage of the global population will ever get to experience.
1. Reethi Ra, Maldives
The Republic of Maldives is a collection of around 1,400 islands to the southwest of India, in the warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. In reality, only around 80 are habitable, with about half of these reserved for that country’s main income earner: tourism. Reethi Ra tops the list of places ‘to be seen’ in the Maldives. This superb all-villa resort epitomises island haute chic.
Choose your luxury villa on the beach or over the water. Either way, you get supremely spacious villas of exceptional design that extend across six kilometres of private coastline, and are among the largest in the world. You’ll want for nothing, and the only decision you have to make is where to anchor your luxury yacht, unless you choose to land your private jet at Malé and charter a private seaplane.
2. Ocean Club, Bahamas
Staying with the island theme, except this time we are on the other side of the planet a little east of Miami in the best part of the Atlantic Ocean. No matter, the ambiance is equally grand and impressive and here, you be ‘holed up’ in palatial splendor.
Welcome to the secret escape of the world’s elite. This island resort personifies tropical colonial elegance to the limits, and in so doing reflects the superb credentials of an elegant estate fit for Royalty. Marvel at the terraced steps of the Versailles Gardens, complete with 12th-century Augustinian cloisters, and then walk on down to the finest beach in the whole Bahamas – exclusive use, naturally!
3. Wolgan Valley Resort, Australia
Nestled in the lee of the Greater Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Wolgan Valley Resort & Spa is a conservation-based retreat. It combines unadulterated luxury and seclusion with a quintessentially Australian bush experience. The resort is sandwiched between two national parks. A spectacular 7,000-acre wildlife reserve is all part of a scene that features 40 elegantly appointed suites.
These freestanding suites offer a sense of place as they capitalise on the incredible local terrain. Each has its own swimming pool, double-sided fireplace and private veranda with stunning views of the Wolgan Valley, and craggy sandstone escarpments beyond.
4. The Palm, Dubai, UAE
Let’s touch down in the desert for our next stopover, this time on the peninsula of one of the world’s most incredible landscapes, Palm Island. Prepare to discover Dubai’s most stylish beach resort.
With the wonder and excitement of the city skyline on the horizon, an exclusive enclave of impeccable accommodation is the preserve of this residential marvel of manicured gardens and shimmering pools. The resort’s idyllic location creates the perfect platform for an array of activities including fabulous excursions, golf, and leisurely water sports.
5. One&Only, Cape Town, South Africa
Heading due south, our final port of call is beautiful Cape Town, and more specifically an urban chic resort with world famous Table Mountain as a backdrop. This stunning resort is right in the centre of the action in the old harbour area of Cape Town at the bustling Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Here you will find an unprecedented level of luxury and style in a working waterfront in one of the world’s most exciting cities.
Sadly, all good things must end. We have enjoyed some island-hopping, travelled east and west, taken in a desert location and ended up in the Fairest Cape of them all down at the southern tip of Africa. What a spread, and what a great experience as we enjoyed unashamed luxury at each resort! Bye, Bye credit card or is it hello debt!
